I finally got my bifocals and that, along with the cataract surgery, has improved my vision substantially. I feel for the people from long ago who didn't have the technology to improve their vision and the ones today in poor countries who can't afford the technology we have today. You know how they have big machines for setting your lenses at the optometrist? This place had rather steampunk looking glasses with multiple lenses that they switched around. John took a photo of me wearing those glasses. Cool, huh? The place was downtown not far from Charles de Gaul Metro station. I love going downtown on the Metro.

The glasses shop look much like
the ones in the states.

My birthday. I got Philosophers' Guild dolls of Charlie Chaplin and Claude Monet (on the far left in the image below) which we put in our picture window with a bench the kit-kats sleep on. We get lots of visitors and all 3 cats love that.

French bakeries supply the prettiest boxes. Ruth's birthday cake. Charlie in the kitty tunnel.

John and I got our first AstraZeneca vaccination. Our second one is in early June.

We got our shot at our doctor's office. The place was crowded although there was sufficient spacing for social distancing.

Speaking of social distancing, there are so many bad decisions being made about all aspects of CovID-19. The medical community is very unhappy with the Macron Administration, as are we. Only 1/3 of the healthcare workers in France are vaccinated. Note where France is in this chart of vaccination rates in Europe by Country. Compare the active cases and serious critical cases in France vs the rest of Europe. Pausing AstraZeneca vaccines in France caused major problems with vaccinations outside of Europe.

Our doctor's office in Rennes is one of the modern buildings. Entryway to our doctor's office. This houseboat / barber shop / hair salon is on the canal next to our doctor's office.

Tommy came back from the vet today after they ran tests. Results: He has hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (onset of heart failure). Tommy also has late kidney disease.

The vet's diagnosis about Tommy's heart is: Dilation left atrium + thickening of the walls of the left ventricule and septum. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy with the onset of congestive heart failure requiring treatment.

He will be taking Benefortin. He will only be with us for a few months. Buster is still addicted to his Uncle Tommy, so that will be an additional challenge.

I gave a presentation about giant "robots" (animatronics or as I like to say - zombie/brainless robots) in France to the STEM klatch I hang with in Eugene OR. Here are some links related to a part that presentation. These concern street theater by 2 of the "robots" in Toulouse. There are many other "robots" and scripted presentations with very cool FX. Asterion the giant Minotaur and Ariadne the giant spider are from Greek myth.

John's birthday. He got wooden sea life puzzles and pizza. John loves jigsaw puzzles. And pizza, although he partakes of pizza infrequently.

Good News! You can now explore the Louvre's entire collection online. A new digital database features 480,000 works from the Paris museum's holdings for free. Previously, the public only had access to about 30,000 listings of works in the Louvre's collections.

Thanks to a major website redesign and a new online collection database, browsing the historic museum's holdings from home is easier than ever, reports Alaa Elassar for CNN. For the first time ever, the Louvre's entire art collection is available to search online. The updated catalogue boasts more than 480,000 entries, from rare items stowed away in storage to the iconic Venus de Milo and Winged Victory of Samothrace. (Though the digital database is free to browse, offerings are not open access, meaning users cannot directly download, share or reuse the images.)

"Today, the Louvre is dusting off its treasures, even the least-known," says the museum's president, Jean-Luc Martinez, in the statement. "... [A]nyone can access the entire collection of works from a computer or smartphone for free, whether they are on display in the museum, on loan, even long-term, or in storage."

I went to Parc Oberthür and fed the ducks on my way to shopping. It was a warm and sunny day and many people were out and about. Kids kept scaring the ducks so they didn't come ashore. I spread a bunch of seeds for them to eat when the kids left.

My shopping today was in the interesting part of town near us. That neighborhood has a ton of shops and stores including several bakeries, a couple of butchers, patisseries, a pharmacy and a Carrefour and another store. In the other direction is a neighborhood with a computer store, several bars and restaurants, a coiffer, another pharmacy, other grocery stores and another Carrefour, Plus we get deliveries from 4 stores and several restaurants (even before CovID-19). We are well supplied here. Nice place!

The almost summer weather brought many families to the park. Students out of school gathered
and talked in the sun.
The ducks are always a pleasant diversion.
