Cats

Of course we begin with photos of the kitties. The last photo is an Internet meme that instantly reminded me of Buster. He will never be normal. Tommy is doing much better. He and the kit-kats chase each other through the apartment at least once each day. They are so cute!

John and I stayed home most of this month except for a few doctor and dentist visits.

John's foot

After a month of medication, crutches, and resting John's foot is much better but still painful if he turns his foot wrong. Gout is very painful and takes a long time to heal plus it may be an indicator of other health problems. It's not a trivial medical concern. Of course we are both happy that John is doing much better now and thank you to all who expressed their concern and comfort.

Summer in Brittany

Brittany has had lower Covid case loads than many other parts of France and this summer they decided to return to their usual format for video mapping projections - large crowds witnessing an animated show projected onto the Parliament Building a few times a night for several weeks. Last year the format was changed so that people could walk through constant displays which did not encourage large crowds. I saw last year's version and, although it was interesting, the large scale animations are always much more interesting. However, with the Delta variant spreading so quickly throughout Europe Rennes may be a bit premature in changing to the large gatherings format.

Found this pic of Buster and the back end of Charlie from a year ago. The boys aren't very impressed with the scaffolding to renovate the front of our building. Charlie hiding his face
napping with his brother.
Buster and his mom?

Today the French Parliament passed a law mandating presentation of a health pass to be allowed entry to public indoor facilities beginning August 9.

In an address to the nation, Macron announced that from next month anyone wanting to go out to eat or drink, take a long-distance train or visit a shopping centre will need to show either proof of vaccination or a negative test. He ended his speech with, "This time you [the unvaccinated] stay at home, not us."

The "health pass" will also be needed to attend a festival, a theatre show or a cinema screening as part of the government's strategy to tackle the surging number of new cases linked to the Delta variant.

The [French medical appointments] Doctolib web site reported a record 20,000 appointments being taken every minute on Monday evening. The site said early Tuesday morning that a total of 926,000 people had booked a first jab through the platform on Monday, "an absolute record".

Covid tests, which are currently free, will have to be paid for from September "to encourage vaccination instead of taking many tests", Macron added.

With virus infections spiking and hospitalizations rising, French lawmakers have passed a bill requiring the pass in most places as of Aug. 9. Polls show a majority of French support the pass, but some are adamantly opposed.

Five years ago today John and I were at the Bastille Day celebration in Nice at the time of and barely 2 blocks from the terrorist attack. Today Nice held memorials and other gatherings of remembrance.

Nice was added to Unesco's World Heritage Site list today under the label of the 'Winter Resort Town of the Riviera' . World Heritage Sites are designated by Unesco for having particular cultural, historical or scientific importance. France has 47 other sites on the Unesco World Heritage List. Nice is located in the southeast of France between the Alps and the Mediterranean Sea, close to the border with Italy. It is known for its famous Promenade des Anglais, which English aristocracy, who often frequented Nice for winter holidays back in the early 19th century, helped to construct. Other famous sites in Nice are Mont Boron - which overlooks the promenade and the city's beaches - the Cimiez and Baumettes hills, and the city's maze-like old town. It has been a popular tourist destination since the 18th century. Visit our blog entries for 2015 and 2016 for images and descriptions of some of these sites.

In France 100,000 people protested the heath pass law July 17. On July 24. 160,000 protested and on July 31 204,000 protested. Many of the protestors in France are led by far right politicians and the yellow vesters. "Thousands of people answered calls to take to the streets by Florian Philippot, a fringe far-right politician and former right hand of Marine Le Pen who announced earlier this month that he would run in the 2022 presidential election."

"Some 3,000 security forces deployed around Paris for a third weekend of protests against the pass that will be needed soon to enter restaurants and other places. Police took up posts along the Champs-Elysees to guard against an invasion of the famed avenue."

Marion, one of our friends in Nice told us: "Nice now requires that all people must wear masks outdoors. Huge signs have been put up on several streets and we have seen many pulled down. Very few people are wearing masks and we have not seen any enforcement."
